What to Pack vs. Sell Before Moving to Singapore

The packing question people actually struggle with isn’t the big stuff, it’s the middle-tier stuff: not obviously worth shipping, not obviously worth tossing. Here’s how I’d sort it.

Bring it

• Documents: passports, birth certificates, degree certificates, medical records, anything that’s a pain to replace from abroad.
• Your actual computer and phone, account-tied electronics, and any specific work equipment you need on day one.
• A capsule of climate-appropriate clothing. Singapore is hot and humid every day of the year; leave the winter wardrobe behind or in storage at home.
• Anything genuinely irreplaceable and small: photos, specific sentimental items, the stuff that isn’t about cost at all.

Sell or leave behind

• Furniture. Nearly all of it. Shipping cost by volume rarely makes sense against the cost of buying appropriately-sized furniture once you know your actual apartment.
• Large appliances, for the same reason, plus Singapore runs on 230V with different plugs, so a lot of US appliances need conversion anyway or simply aren’t worth the hassle.
• Books, unless a specific few matter to you. Heavy, bulky, and the cost-to-ship-per-book math almost never works out.
• Anything you haven’t used in the last year. The move is a legitimate forcing function to actually get rid of it instead of paying to relocate it.

The easiest way to avoid regret is to run a one-week test: set aside only what you would need for your first seven days, then mark every remaining item as replace, ship, store or sell. If you cannot explain why an item belongs in the ship pile, it probably does not.

The gear that’s actually worth ordering ahead

A handful of practical things are worth having sorted before or right as you land: a good universal or Singapore-specific plug adapter, a compact voltage converter if you’re bringing any US-only electronics, and packing cubes if you’re consolidating a life into a few suitcases. These are the kind of small, practical items worth a quick Amazon order rather than agonizing over.

What I’d tell a friend

If you’re unsure about an item, default to selling it. Singapore has good shopping for almost everything, shipping is priced by volume, and the things people regret are almost always the big furniture pieces they paid to ship and then didn’t like in the new space anyway.
