Every guide to this makes it sound simple: bring your passport, show up, done. The actual experience has a few more edges than that, mostly around the proof-of-address problem.

The proof-of-address chicken-and-egg problem

Banks want proof of a Singapore address. You don’t have a Singapore address that will show up on a utility bill until you’ve been living somewhere for a bit, and you can’t get a proper lease deposit sorted without money already available locally. This is exactly why the first-weeks temporary housing pillar on this site matters: whatever you’re staying at for those first weeks, keep the booking confirmation, and ask upfront whether the bank will accept it, or accept your Employment Pass address, as a workaround.

The safe approach is to ask the specific bank which documents it accepts before you arrive. Bring your passport, work-pass paperwork, employment letter and your current accommodation confirmation; then follow the bank’s written instruction rather than relying on a forum checklist.

What to actually bring to the appointment

  • Your passport (original, not a copy)
  • Your Employment Pass, or the in-principle approval letter if the physical pass isn’t issued yet
  • Proof of address, or the workaround document the bank has confirmed they’ll accept
  • Sometimes an employer reference letter, confirm this ahead of time so you’re not making a second trip

Call the bank or check their foreigner-specific account page before you go. Requirements shift, and a wasted trip because you’re missing one document is a very avoidable way to lose a morning.

The bridge before your account is open

You may need a way to hold or spend money before a local account is fully active. A multi-currency service can be one bridge: check the current availability, fees, card terms and account protections for your circumstances before relying on it.

What I’d tell a friend

Don’t expect to walk in with just a passport and walk out fully set up in one trip. Call ahead, confirm the document list for your specific situation, and have a bridge (see above) ready so the gap doesn’t stall your first month.

Questions, answered straight

Can I open a Singapore bank account before I arrive?

Do not assume you can complete this from abroad. Each bank sets its own onboarding rules and may ask for identity, immigration and address documents. Start with the bank's current foreigner-account page and get the document list in writing before booking an appointment.

What documents do I need to open a Singapore bank account as a foreigner?

Typically your passport, proof of address (which is awkward before you've moved, see the workaround below), your Employment Pass or in-principle approval, and sometimes a reference letter from your employer. Requirements vary by bank, so call ahead or check the specific bank's foreigner account page before your appointment.

How long does it take to open a bank account in Singapore?

Timing depends on the bank, account type and document review. Treat the account as a first-weeks task, not a same-day promise, and keep a backup payment method until cards and digital banking are working.
